why hire a timing company and what is a timer ?

Why Are Events Timed ?
  • Participants compete with others or accomplish personal completion goals. From just finishing the course or achieving a personal record (called a PR)
  • Timing provides a method to provide participants an official finish time to gauge their performance.
  • Many events offer financial or other types of awards for top finishers.
  • Official, accurate timing is very important for most events.
What is a Timer ?
  • Typically provides a variety of services for event organizers with the core service being "electronic timing"
  • Other SERVICES provided may include Equipment Rentals, On-site Results, Email/Text Results, Awards, Electronics Rentals, Infrastructure, Event Productions, Logo and Graphics Design, Swag and Promotional Items, Branding and Online Stores, Event/Race Directing, Webpage + Website Design/Hosting, Ai Photo Bib-Tagging, Event App, Wifi Network, etc.
  • Timers provide the finish data, review and confirm validity of data, make adjustments to data, and raise concerns for any potential invalid performance.
  • Some timers also own their own events.
  • Good timers are master problem solvers.
*Timers Are Viewed as a Technology Expert by Events.

Electronic chip timing process

Chip: Race Bib with RFID tag (chip) is worn by participant. The chip transmits their data using radio frequencies when crossing timing receiving equipment (mats). Chips MUST be assigned to the correct athlete and recorded properly to score an event.
Timing Hardware: Decoder captures the unique code from the chip and applies a timestamp. Then transmits this info to the scoring software.
Scoring Software: Software relates the raw transponder code and timestamp data to each entrant in a database and calculates times and places of participants using database queries and filters.
Timer Review: Timer reviews and adjusts finish data as needed.
Results: Data is then distributed through multiple forms such as printing hard copies, publishing on Heartland Racing Co. Website and posting on software such as RunSignUp.
